Career education in and around Raleigh took a big leap forward in 2007, when representatives of leading area architectural, construction and engineering firms joined with local educators to form the regionís first ACE mentoring program.
By participating in ACE programs across the country, thousands of high school students learn about the many rewarding career opportunities available to them throughout the building industry.
ACE programs combine hands-on building design projects and field trips with ongoing mentoring from seasoned professionals. The program also provides college scholarships and other financial rewards. Though the Raleigh program initially is being targeted to students from both public and private schools in Durham, Franklin, Johnston and Wake counties, the long-term objective is to expand into other areas as well.
Students in the Raleigh program participate in a unique learn-by-doing process. Organized into teams that reflect actual building industry practices, students engage in hypothetical design projects similar to those professionals work on every day.
Throughout the project process, students work side-by-side with mentors from local architecture, construction management and engineering firms, enabling them to learn the language, tools and sophisticated technologies employed by various building industry professions.
Furthermore, the industry contacts students make through this program can be of invaluable assistance with college, internship and job references, as well as career counseling.
By inspiring students to seek rewarding careers in the building industry, ACE helps meet the industryís growing demand for talented architects, construction managers, engineers and tradespeople.
