ACE has given me a head start in learning the expectations and responsibilities of an architect. I now know what is expected as I go on to college and what I need to do to prepare myself.
Eastern Shore
The ACE Mentor Program of Maryland’s Eastern Shore helps students learn about career opportunities in architecture, construction management, and engineering, while also providing mentoring and scholarships for those interested in pursuing these careers. Over the past few years, we’ve awarded over $61,000 in scholarships to students at our Eastern Shore locations.
Program participants come from local public and private high schools. When recruiting, we make a special effort to reach those who are traditionally under-represented in our industry, such as women and minorities, as well as those who may be unaware of careers in the design and construction professions.
Throughout the 18-session program, we introduce these students to the building industry’s career potential by having them work as part of a collaborative team under the mentorship of an industry professional to plan and design a “Mock” project on a real site. The program concludes with presentations that simulate the ones professionals deliver to their clients.
Our Team Projects
Our teams this past school year worked on a variety of imaginative and exiting projects. These included: “Harbor Heros” Sea Wall for St. Michaels by St. Michaels Middle High School, St. Michaels, MD; “Project Clarity” Oyster Hatchery and Visitor Building by Easton High School, Easton, MD; “The Castle” by Saints Peter and Paul High School, Easton, MD and “A Salisbury Riverfront Community Center” by Wicomico Public High Schools, Salisbury, MD.
Guided by mentors from local building industry professional firms, the teams created site plans, architectural and engineering designs, sketches and working drawings, conceptual models, and other materials required to clearly visualize and present their ideas.
This year at our 20th Annual Awards Ceremony at Saints Peter and Paul High School, our students presented their projects and scholarships were awarded to eligible participants.
