ACE Mentor Paso del Norte (El Paso, Texas)
The ACE Mentor Program Grows into Western Texas
ACE Paso Del Norte’s story begins in 2021 when an ACE mentor from San Antonio met a group of impressive students from El Paso presenting their projects at the TxA conference. He reached out to his regional director to see how ACE could become a part of the students’ path into the industry.
There were no ACE affiliates anywhere nearby. However, a silver lining of ACE moving to virtual during the pandemic allowed the El Paso students to join the ACE Mentor Arizona affiliate. ACE Mentor Arizona hosted the El Paso students under their affiliate.
Over the next two years, El Paso students, led by their teacher, Ms. Valenzuela, traveled by bus to Phoenix for the annual “Showcase Awards” event. Ms. Valenzuela made the most of these trips by adding site and office visits to their busy agendas. The students also got to meet the Arizona students and mentors in person.
As the 2023-24 program year wrapped up, and ACE programs were back in person, El Paso was ready to become their own ACE Mentor affiliate. With the support of the ACE Arizona board and mentors, help from National, and the ACE networks, ACE Paso Del Norte started to take shape. They formed a board, reached out to their local community, and started the necessary steps to become an affiliate.
By fall 2024, all their hard work paid off, and ACE Paso Del Norte officially launched! The board, students, Ms. Valenzuela, mentors and volunteers are all committed to making this first year a success. The students have high hopes of going to DC for the National Competition, winning scholarships, securing externships, and fully embracing the opportunities that ACE Mentor offers.
